In a quiet Irmo, South Carolina subdivision, a heart-wrenching scene unfolded in January 2014, leaving a community in disbelief. Inside a two-story home in the Riverwalk neighborhood, authorities discovered the bodies of a family of four in what was determined to be a triple murder-suicide. The victims were identified as 28-year-old Kia Von Miller, and her two young children, three-year-old Kyler Devane Miller and one-year-old Syrai Raquel Miller.
The investigation concluded that Kia and
her children were fatally shot by her husband and their father, 38-year-old Sheddrick Byron Miller. After killing his family, Sheddrick then turned the gun on himself. The Richland County Coroner confirmed that all four family members died from gunshots to the head. A handgun was found near Sheddrick's body at the scene.
The tragic discovery was made after Sheddrick Miller's mother became concerned when she hadn't heard from her son for several days and went to the family's home to check on them. Upon entering, she found the devastating scene and alerted authorities. Investigators reported that the children were found in their individual bedrooms, while the two adults were found together in another room.
Friends and neighbors of the Miller family were left in shock, describing them as devout Jehovah's Witnesses who were active in their faith and even hosted Bible studies in their home. Sheddrick was a barber who owned his own shop, and Kia was a stay-at-home mother. Those who knew them saw a happy, loving family and expressed that there were no apparent signs of trouble. The family had recently returned from a holiday trip to Walt Disney World, adding to the profound sense of confusion and sorrow among those who knew them. Since the perpetrator took his own life, there were no arrests or subsequent legal proceedings.
