In the small town of West-Pelzer, South Carolina, a tragic incident cut short the life of 11-year-old Jonathan Tyler Paxton on July 25, 2014. The young, white male was a student at West Pelzer Elementary and an active member of Black Belts for Christ. His sudden death left his family and the community in profound grief.
On that summer evening, at his home on Hindman Street, a sound described as a 'popping' noise emanated from Jonathan's room.
His parents, who were in other parts of the house at the time, made the devastating discovery that their son had been shot. Emergency services were called, and Jonathan was rushed to Greenville Memorial Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
Investigators from the West Pelzer Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division looked into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. It was determined that Jonathan was the only person injured at the residence. His parents informed the authorities that their son had received education on gun safety. After a thorough investigation, law enforcement concluded that the shooting was a tragic accident and was self-inflicted.
