In the quiet community of Summerville, South Carolina, the life of 16-year-old Jaquarie Nasir Perry was abruptly cut short on the evening of January 27, 2020. A student at Summerville High School, the young Black male was fatally shot in the Flowertown neighborhood, sending ripples of shock and grief through his family, friends, and the wider community.

The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the homicide, which was initially reported as shots fired into apartments. Investigators were soon redirected to a nearby residence where they found Perry with a gunshot wound. Despite immediate CPR efforts by deputies and the arrival of EMS, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
