In a tragic turn of events on September 3, 2014, in Columbia, South Carolina, 28-year-old Akawandalis Ann Byrd, a Black/African American woman, lost her life to gun violence. The incident, which also resulted in injuries to two other individuals, was later determined by the Richland County Sheriff's Department to be a case of domestic violence.
