In the quiet woods of Lake City, South Carolina, a day of hunting among friends turned into a tragedy on Saturday, December 27, 2014, with the death of 25-year-old Samantha Moore. A resident of Anderson, South Carolina, Moore was with a group of about half a dozen people, including her fiancé, on a hunting trip in Florence County. The group was tracking a deer when one of the hunters, who was carrying a shotgun, tripped and fell.
The fall caused the firearm to discharge, and the shot fatally struck Moore. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Samantha Lynn Moore, who had gotten engaged just two weeks prior to the incident, was a surgical technologist at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Remembered by her family as someone who loved life and embraced it to the fullest, she had taken up hunting and fishing to spend more time with her fiancé. Her cousin recalled her as a loving individual who had a special bond with her family and her dog, a white Chihuahua named Boey.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Florence County Coroner's Office launched an investigation into the shooting. The authorities treated the incident as a hunting accident, and no charges were filed against the individual whose gun discharged. The investigation concluded that her death was a tragic accident, leaving her family and friends to mourn the sudden and unexpected loss of a young woman who was just beginning a new chapter in her life.
