In the winter of 2015, a life was tragically cut short in Marion, South Carolina. John Floyd, a 36-year-old Black man, was fatally shot on January 6th while sitting in a car outside the Midway Minimart on Jones Avenue. The sudden violence of the act sent ripples of shock and grief through the community. Floyd was struck by multiple bullets and was rushed to the Carolinas Hospital System of Marion, but his injuries proved to be too severe.
The investigation into the shooting was swift.
Law enforcement, with assistance from the State Law Enforcement Division, quickly secured the crime scene at the convenience store. Evidence markers dotted the area, indicating the intensity of the gunfire. Within approximately six hours of the incident, investigators had identified a suspect and moved in to make an arrest. Twenty-four-year-old Jerell Reaves was taken into custody at his home without incident.
While the arrest brought a sense of progress to the case, the motive behind the shooting remained unclear to the public. In December of 2016, nearly two years after the death of John Floyd, the legal proceedings came to a conclusion. Jerell Reaves pleaded guilty to the charge of murder. Following his plea, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting. This brought a measure of closure to a case that had begun with a senseless act of violence outside a local convenience store.
