Freddie Lee Woodberry, a 29-year-old man from Marion, South Carolina, tragically lost his life on September 14, 2017. Known affectionately as 'Monk' to his friends and family, Woodberry was shot multiple times on Pickens Street in front of the Rosewood housing complex. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. At the time of his death, Woodberry was remembered as an outgoing and wonderful person who was always willing to help those in need.
He was educated in the Mullins public school system and was a beloved member of his community, leaving behind his mother, Theresa Woodberry, and a large extended family.
The investigation into Freddie Lee Woodberry's death led to the arrests of three individuals. One of the suspects was identified as Lance Aquan Killings. He faced several charges, including murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, unlawful carrying of a pistol, and pointing and presenting a firearm. Another individual, Devante Marquise Legette, was also implicated in the case.
In a turn of events, the murder charges against Lance Aquan Killings were dismissed in July 2019. The Fourth Circuit Solicitor's Office, which had taken over the prosecution due to a conflict of interest with the Twelfth Circuit Solicitor's Office, determined that there was insufficient evidence and witness statements to secure a conviction for murder. Devante Marquise Legette, who was initially charged with attempted murder, later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree assault and battery. As part of a plea deal, he was sentenced to five years in prison.
