Do you know who murdered Edward Alvis? In the early morning hours of February 29, 2016, the Chickasaw neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, was disturbed by the sound of a loud boom. A concerned resident, Yolanda Kimbro, was awakened by the noise and peered outside to see a car still running on Grand Avenue near 38th street. Initially thinking the driver might be intoxicated and resting, she called the police. The reality of the situation, however, was far more grim.
When Louisville Metro Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 2:30 a.m., they discovered a man inside the vehicle who had been shot to death.
The victim was identified as Edward Alvis, a 34-year-old Black male. An autopsy would later confirm that he died from multiple gunshot wounds. Friends remembered Alvis as a dedicated father to his two daughters, with one friend recalling how he had recently canceled plans to spend more time with them. The news of his violent death, the city's 12th homicide of the year, sent shockwaves through his community, leaving family and friends desperate for answers.
In the immediate aftermath of the discovery, police had very little information to share with the public and no suspects were identified. Investigators were working to piece together what might have brought Alvis to that particular location in the early hours of the morning. Residents of the area expressed their concerns about the rising crime in their neighborhood.
