In the early morning hours of October 6, 2015, the life of 23-year-old Markeith Terrell Tracy, a Black male, was tragically cut short on Carlisle Street in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Reports from that night suggest Tracy was in a car with a female companion when a black pickup truck, occupied by two men, drove past. The truck then circled back, and shots were fired, striking Tracy twice.
Responding to calls of gunfire around 1:15 a.m., police discovered him unresponsive in the front yard of a residence, suffering from gunshot wounds to his leg and torso. He was rushed to Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, where he succumbed to his injuries. At the time of his death, Tracy was the loving father of a young son, Dallas Terrell Tracy-Chambers.
The investigation into the homicide of Markeith Terrell Tracy remains ongoing, a cold case that has left his family searching for answers and justice for years. Authorities have described the suspects as two Black males who fled the scene in a small, black single-cab pickup truck with tinted windows. One of the men was said to have dreadlocks and was wearing a skull cap, while the second suspect had short hair and wore a fitted baseball cap. Despite these descriptions, no arrests have been made in the years following the shooting.
The Spartanburg Police Department continues to seek information from the public that could lead to a breakthrough in the case. A cash reward has been offered for any information that results in an arrest. Tracy's mother, Donna Tracy, has been a vocal advocate for her son, persistently appealing to the community for anyone with knowledge of the events of that night to come forward. The family remembers Markeith as a cherished son and a devoted father, and they hold onto hope that those responsible for his death will one day be brought to justice.
