For weeks, his death remained a mystery, a cold case that would take five years to thaw. On October 30, 2015, firefighters responded to a house fire at 20 Michael Drive in Greenville. In the basement of the home, they made a grim discovery: the body of Cecil Morris. An investigation soon revealed that the fire was not the cause of his death; rather, it was an attempt to conceal a more sinister act. The coroner determined that Morris had been shot and killed weeks before the fire was set.
For years, the case grew cold due to a lack of evidence, leaving family and friends without answers. However, in the fall of 2020, detectives with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office decided to take a fresh look at the circumstances surrounding Morris's death. A renewed and thorough examination of the evidence, including Morris's phone records, led to a long-awaited breakthrough. Investigators uncovered video footage that implicated Morris's former roommate, Jason “Travis” Merrill, in the crime.
The investigation suggested a chilling sequence of events. Authorities believe that after killing Morris, Merrill fled to California, where he is alleged to have used Morris's credit cards, charging thousands of dollars. Investigators believe he then returned to Greenville and, on October 30th, set fire to the residence they had shared before fleeing to a relative's house in Brevard, North Carolina. It was there that Morris's vehicle was eventually located. In November 2020, five years after the discovery of Cecil Morris's body, Jason “Travis” Merrill was arrested in North Carolina. He was subsequently charged with murder, arson, and weapon possession in connection with the death of his former roommate. The motive for the killing remained unclear to investigators. Merrill was also hit with several fraud charges for the alleged financial crimes that followed the murder.
