Franklin Othell Williams Jr., a 28-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on November 22, 2015, in North Charleston, South Carolina. His death, the result of a gunshot wound, was investigated as a homicide, leaving his family and community to grapple with the sudden and violent loss. Affectionately known as 'BJ,' Williams was a father whose life was cut short in what would be revealed as a deadly shootout.
The investigation into his death initially led to the arrest of his
brother, Charles Gordon Perry, who was charged with murder. The North Charleston Police Department discovered Williams' body in a warehouse on Southrail Road, and the subsequent arrest of his brother pointed to a complex and tragic family dynamic. This development suggested a deeply personal conflict that had escalated to a fatal conclusion.
However, the case evolved to reveal a different sequence of events. Ultimately, two other men, Justin Martel Wilson, then 23, and Marvin Donte Bryan, then 30, were convicted of murder and attempted murder in connection with Williams' death. They were both sentenced to 50 years in prison. Prosecutors believe Wilson fired the shot that killed Williams during a shootout between a group of men in a van and another group in a car.
Further legal actions were taken against others involved in the incident. Keith Lamont Evans Jr., 23, and Daqian Henry Gilliard, 22, were also charged in Williams' death and provided testimony against Wilson and Bryan. A fifth individual faced an accessory charge for their role in the events of that day. The resolution of the case in the courts brought a measure of justice for the killing of Franklin Othell Williams Jr., though the circumstances of his death underscore a story of violence that had far-reaching consequences for multiple families.
