In the early hours of January 9, 2016, a dispute inside a nightclub in Loris, South Carolina, turned deadly, claiming the life of 31-year-old Christopher Alexander Sumpter. An argument between Sumpter, a Black/African American male, and another individual escalated into a violent confrontation that resulted in Sumpter being shot multiple times. He was rushed to Grand Strand Medical Center for medical attention but ultimately succumbed to his injuries during surgery.
The Horry County
Police Department launched an immediate investigation into the shooting. Eyewitnesses reported that the shooter, along with three accomplices, fled the scene in an SUV following the incident. Through their investigation, authorities were able to identify four individuals believed to be involved in the events that led to Sumpter's death.
Shortly after the incident, the four suspects surrendered to the police, a move facilitated by contact made through their family members. As a result of the investigation, 23-year-old Devin Wilson was charged with murder. Three other men, 22-year-old Devon Clark, 20-year-old Leveon Edwards, and 23-year-old Timothy Jacobs, were charged with accessory after the fact to murder. The case against the four individuals then proceeded through the legal system.
