In a tragic turn of events on a Saturday night in Kingstree, South Carolina, a family argument culminated in the death of 30-year-old George Goethe Mixon III. On the evening of January 30, 2016, law enforcement officers were dispatched to a residence on Hemington Highway following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mixon lying on the living room floor, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his chest.
He was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect within the home. Mixon’s own mother, 65-year-old Phyllis E. Owens, was implicated in the death of her son. Investigators determined that a verbal altercation between the mother and son had escalated, leading to the deadly shooting. Owens was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.
Following her arrest, Phyllis E. Owens was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. She was taken into custody by the Williamsburg County Sheriff's Office and awaited a bond hearing. The community was left to grapple with the shocking nature of the crime, as a son’s life was cut short allegedly at the hands of his mother.
