A passing motorist discovered his body on the shoulder of U.S. 176, near the Molly's Rock Picnic Area within the serene expanse of the Sumter National Forest.

An autopsy later confirmed the grim reality that Sanders' death was no accident; he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. Michael Saheem Spears, a 22-year-old from Aiken, was identified as the individual believed to be responsible for Sanders' death. It is believed that the two met in person sometime after midnight on April 10, leading to a fatal encounter motivated by robbery.
Spears was apprehended in Aiken on unrelated charges, including driving a stolen vehicle and receiving stolen goods. These charges included murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
