In the spring of 2016, the life of a young man from Detroit, Michigan, was cut short in a violent encounter in Conway, South Carolina. Cameron James Culp, a 20-year-old male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of May 2, 2016. The incident took place in the parking lot of The Cove apartment complex, a residence near Coastal Carolina University. Though the complex housed students, Culp himself was not enrolled at the university.
