In the quiet town of Townville, South Carolina, the life of 47-year-old Jeffrey DeWitt Osborne came to a tragic and unexpected end on September 28, 2016. A local poultry farmer and a 1987 graduate of Westside High School, he was at his residence when the unthinkable happened. His own 14-year-old son, Jesse Osborne, shot him three times in the back of the head as he sat reading in a chair.
This violent act was the grim prelude to a further tragedy that would soon unfold in their community.
After killing his father, Jesse took his father's pickup truck and drove about three miles to Townville Elementary School. There, he crashed the vehicle into a playground fence where a group of first-graders were having recess. He then opened fire on the children and their teacher. The shooting resulted in the death of 6-year-old Jacob Hall, who succumbed to his injuries three days later, and wounded another student and a teacher. The rampage was halted when a volunteer firefighter bravely tackled the young shooter. Investigators later revealed that Jesse's gun had jammed after each shot because he had loaded the wrong type of ammunition.
In the aftermath of the horrific events, Jesse Osborne was arrested and faced the full weight of the law. He was charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of his father and Jacob Hall, as well as three counts of attempted murder. The decision was made to try him as an adult. In December 2018, Jesse pleaded guilty to all charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
However, the legal saga did not end there. In 2023, following an appeal, Jesse Osborne's two life sentences were amended to two 75-year sentences. During a court hearing, he offered an apology to his family and the victims for the first time.
