On New Year's Day in 2017, the life of 26-year-old Marissa Hope Reynoso was tragically cut short in her West Columbia, South Carolina, home. In a harrowing event that unfolded that evening, Marissa and her two young sons, four-year-old Elijah Chavez and one-year-old Ezra Chavez, were found deceased in the master bedroom of their residence on Old Barnwell Road.
The events leading to the grim discovery began to unfold when Marissa placed a frantic 911 call to report that her boyfriend,
Jorge Luis Chavez, was breaking into her house. During the call, she informed the dispatcher that he was attempting to enter through a window. Her voice, initially controlled, grew more frantic as she realized he was gaining entry. The dispatcher advised her to secure herself and her children in a room, but soon after, screams were heard before the line went silent. Law enforcement officers arrived at the home within a minute of the call.
Upon entering the residence, deputies found a devastating scene in the master bedroom. Marissa, Elijah, and Ezra had all been fatally shot. Marissa sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her chest, while Elijah was shot in the back and Ezra in the chest. Also in the room was the body of 25-year-old Jorge Luis Chavez, the father of the two boys. Investigators determined that Chavez had shot Marissa and their children before turning the gun on himself. The weapon, a 9mm handgun, was reported to have been stolen years prior.
Further investigation revealed a history of domestic turmoil. In the months preceding the murder-suicide, law enforcement had been called to Marissa's residence on at least two prior occasions due to disturbances involving Chavez. In one instance, he had reportedly made alarming statements to her, saying, 'I'll see you in heaven.' Family members indicated that Marissa had been trying to distance herself from Chavez. The investigation concluded that Chavez was the sole perpetrator of the killings, and with his death, the case was closed without any arrests.
