In the quiet town of Easley, South Carolina, a story of loss and grief unfolded, culminating in the death of 60-year-old Elbert Lee 'Bert' Henderson. A well-known figure in the community and a longtime employee of Clemson University, his death in February 2017 left many heartbroken.
Henderson was reported missing from his Easley home on a Monday evening after he failed to show up for work. This prompted a search involving deputies, K-9 units, and horses.
The search concluded the following day when his body was discovered in a wooded area over a mile from his property.
The county coroner later confirmed that Henderson's death was a suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It was reported that Henderson had been deeply affected by the recent passing of his wife, Lee Ann, who had died in November after a battle with cancer. Family members believe the loss of his wife was the reason for his suicide.
Bert Henderson was a significant part of the Clemson University community for decades, starting his career as an athletic trainer in 1978 and eventually becoming the Associate Athletic Director of Planned Giving. He was remembered fondly by friends and colleagues for his warm and welcoming nature. A memorial service was held at Easley First Baptist Church, where he was an active member. He is survived by his two daughters.
