Derrick Darrell Barber, a 28-year-old male, was fatally shot on May 11, 2017, in Charleston, South Carolina. The incident occurred after a prearranged meeting, and when police arrived at the scene, they discovered two children in Barber's car who were physically unharmed. The investigation into Barber's death led to the apprehension of two suspects.
Within days of the shooting, authorities arrested 23-year-old K'Sone Campbell of Charleston.
He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Following Campbell's arrest, a second suspect, 19-year-old Demetrius Jamiek Young of North Charleston, was also taken into custody and faced the same charges. At the time of his arrest for Barber's murder, Young was already out on bond for a separate incident that occurred in 2016, for which he was later convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to ten years in prison.
The legal proceedings for the two men charged in Derrick Barber's death moved forward through the court system. K'Sone Campbell was ultimately convicted of murder for his role in the shooting and received a sentence of thirty-seven years in prison. His subsequent appeal of the conviction was not successful. As of late 2017, Demetrius Jamiek Young was still awaiting trial for the murder of Derrick Barber while beginning his sentence for the unrelated attempted murder conviction.
