In the summer of 2017, the life of 18-year-old Jasmin Angelica McGill was tragically cut short. A recent graduate of Gaffney High School, she was a vibrant and active member of her community, deeply involved in her church, Concord Baptist Church, where she participated in the Shining Stars, Praise Dancers, Junior Missionary, and Junior Usher Board. She was also a counselor in the Anointed Academy Summer Camp.
Her positive influence extended to her school activities, including the Gospel Choir and the AKA Emerging Leaders, as well as community groups like the Upstate Cheer Zone and the Giving Back Organization.
On the night of August 7, 2017, a commotion on Lincoln Drive in Gaffney, South Carolina, ended in gunfire. Jasmin was struck by a bullet and was rushed to Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, where she succumbed to her injuries in the early morning hours of August 8, 2017. The initial investigation left the community searching for answers, with authorities at the time unable to immediately determine if the shooting was gang-related.
In the months that followed, the investigation into Jasmin's death continued. A break in the case appeared to come in September 2017 when a man was charged with breach of peace in connection with the ongoing probe. However, a more significant development occurred in April 2018, when Tony Cecil Littlejohn was charged with the murder of Jasmin Angelica McGill.
The legal proceedings against Littlejohn brought a glimmer of hope for justice for Jasmin's family and friends. However, the path to resolution was not straightforward. In a surprising turn of events, in April 2023, the murder charge against Tony Cecil Littlejohn was dismissed. The dismissal was attributed to what the prosecution and defense described as 'factual errors' in the case. A critical issue that came to light during a plea hearing was that the weapon seized during the investigation had been destroyed before the case could go to trial, representing a significant flaw in the handling of the evidence. As a result of these investigative shortcomings, the charges were dropped, leaving the case unresolved and justice for Jasmin McGill officially unfulfilled.
