In the quiet town of Lancaster, South Carolina, the life of 34-year-old Antwan James, a male with a newborn child, was cut short on a grim Thursday night in December. The tragic events unfolded when James, in the company of two women, was leaving a residence on Faile Street. An argument that had transpired earlier in the evening with a man identified as Dequavis Laquail Blackmon, who was the ex-boyfriend of one of the women, foreshadowed the violence to come.
James had reportedly stepped in to de-escalate the prior confrontation.
As James was driving away with the two women, Blackmon allegedly emerged from the side of a house and opened fire on their vehicle. In a desperate attempt to escape the barrage of bullets, James exited the car and fled down Threatt Street. However, he was relentlessly pursued by his attacker, who continued to fire his weapon. The chase ended tragically in the backyard of a home on Threatt Street, where James was found suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and immediately began to treat James for his injuries. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to the gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead. The following morning, Dequavis Laquail Blackmon, then 28 years old, surrendered to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
