Adam Paul DuBuose Legrand, a 23-year-old male, was known for his love of the rodeo, where he actively participated as a bareback and bull rider in the Southern Rodeo Association and High School Rodeo Association.

The afternoon of March 21, 2018, shattered the tranquility of Brazell Road, just off Percival Road in northeast Richland County. At approximately 5:30 p.m., Adam was fatally shot in the upper body at his home. The burst of violence also left a woman injured. The alleged assailant, 21-year-old Kenneth Dylan Shirley, was reportedly an acquaintance of the victims. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear to investigators, casting a pall of confusion over the senseless act.
Following the shooting, Shirley fled into the dense woods behind the residence, sparking an hour-long manhunt. Law enforcement officers descended on the area, and their search culminated in Shirley's apprehension. A semi-automatic pistol was recovered from him at the time of his arrest. In the wake of the incident, Kenneth Dylan Shirley was charged with one count of murder and five counts of attempted murder, as he had also fired at the responding deputies. He was additionally charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
