In a tragic turn of events on September 30, 2018, in Columbia, South Carolina, a young male child named Tyreen McDowell, who was just shy of his second birthday, was killed. The shocking incident unfolded inside an apartment on Beatty Downs Road, where Tyreen and his 23-year-old father, James Antheny McDowell, were both victims of a fatal shooting. A neighbor, hearing gunshots and McDowell's cries for help, promptly called 911.
When Richland County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered James McDowell in front of the residence; he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital. Inside the apartment, they made the heartbreaking discovery of young Tyreen, who had also been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the double homicide, which authorities described as a home robbery, quickly pointed towards a targeted event with no signs of forced entry, suggesting that the victims may have known their assailants. The Richland County Sheriff's Department diligently pursued leads, and their efforts culminated in the arrests of three suspects: Traevon Ray, Dyquan King, and Markelyis Gibson. All three individuals were charged with two counts of murder and possessing a weapon during a violent crime. Sheriff Leon Lott characterized the senseless act as being closely associated with young people, drugs, and gang activity, emphasizing that the shooting was not accidental but a deliberate act.
Further investigation revealed a deeper web of violence connected to one of the suspects. Dyquan King was also implicated in another murder that occurred just four days prior to the deaths of the McDowells. In that separate incident, a 58-year-old man named Ronald Bonnette was tragically caught in the crossfire of a gang-related shootout while he was simply taking out his trash. This connection underscored the pervasive and destructive nature of the gang violence that authorities believed was at the root of these tragic deaths.
