In the autumn of 2018, the life of 19-year-old Jayquan R. Hughes was tragically cut short in Columbia, South Carolina. On the evening of November 26th, deputies from the Richland County Sheriff's Department were called to the 1800 block of Crestview Avenue around 8:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. There they discovered Hughes with a gunshot wound to his lower body.
Emergency services transported Hughes to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, with the
coroner's office later confirming he died from a gunshot wound to the stomach. Born on August 3, 1999, to Natalie Sease and Johnny Hughes, Jayquan was remembered as a quiet, down-to-earth young man who was deeply devoted to his family. He was known for his love of cooking on the grill, relaxing, and spending time with his siblings and cousins.
The investigation into Hughes's death led authorities to identify Tyshawn Carrigan as a suspect. The Richland County Sheriff's Department sought public assistance in locating Carrigan, describing him as 'armed and dangerous.' The search for Carrigan concluded on January 24, 2019, when he was arrested by Richland County deputies and U.S. Marshals. The then 20-year-old was taken into custody without incident and charged with the murder of Jayquan Hughes. He was subsequently booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
