On a summer afternoon in Columbia, South Carolina, gunfire erupted, leaving a young man's life cut short. Donquiese D. Green, a 23-year-old male, was on the 3400 block of Magrath Street on Saturday, July 30, 2016, when a vehicle, described by witnesses as silver or gray, pulled up. An argument broke out between the occupants of the vehicle and people who had gathered on the street, including Green.
The verbal altercation quickly escalated to violence as shots were fired from the car.
Green was struck in the upper body by the gunfire. Another individual was also wounded, sustaining injuries to his lower body. Emergency services were called, and Green was rushed to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Donquiese D. Green succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead in the emergency room at approximately 12:44 p.m. The Richland County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound.
The Columbia Police Department launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of suspects. The day after the incident, two men were apprehended. Tyrone Cannon Hollins Jr., 23, and Keoki Jonathon Hollins, 21, were arrested and faced charges of murder and attempted murder. Keoki Hollins was also charged with possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but a targeted attack. Authorities also identified a third suspect, 22-year-old Jamal Trutus Curtis Hughey, who remained at large following the arrests of the Hollins brothers. Warrants were issued for Hughey's arrest on charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. Law enforcement recovered the vehicle believed to be involved in the incident and continued to ask the public for any information regarding Hughey's whereabouts.
