The tragic event unfolded in a matter of moments in the afternoon. Young Kayden was at home with his grandmother, Bekki Gunter, after they had returned from running errands.
Ms. Gunter had placed her purse on a bed and briefly went to the bathroom.
In that short time, the curious toddler managed to unzip the purse, from which he retrieved a teal-colored Glock pistol. Kayden then accidentally discharged the weapon, inflicting a fatal gunshot wound to his own face. Responding deputies attempted to provide medical aid to the child before he was transported by emergency medical services. Tragically, Kayden was pronounced deceased while en route to the hospital.
The Greenville County Coroner's Office investigated the shooting and ruled the death an accident.
