In the late afternoon of August 30, 2019, a dispute between coworkers would tragically escalate, ending the life of 20-year-old Michael “Chuckie” Jaqueze Bethea in Allendale, South Carolina. The young man, a male, was walking near Barton Road when he was confronted by Courdell Dejuan Loadholt, who was 36 at the time. The confrontation stemmed from an ongoing disagreement Loadholt had with Bethea's aunt, with whom he worked.
On that fateful day, Loadholt was driving with his
12-year-old son when he spotted Bethea. He stopped his vehicle, retrieved a semi-automatic pistol, and engaged in a brief verbal exchange with Bethea. The argument quickly turned violent as Loadholt fired his weapon multiple times, striking Bethea three times in the back. As Bethea was left crawling in the road, Loadholt fled the scene.
A passing motorist, who happened to be a nurse, and her passenger, also a nurse, discovered the wounded Bethea. They stopped to render aid, applying pressure to his wounds before transporting him in their vehicle to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, Michael Bethea succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead about half an hour after the shooting.
Following the incident, Loadholt drove to a relative's house and called 9-1-1. He claimed to police that he had acted in self-defense, alleging that Bethea was armed. However, investigators found no weapon at the scene, and the nurses who assisted Bethea stated that he was unarmed. Loadholt surrendered the pistol he used in the shooting, and ballistics analysis confirmed it was the weapon that fired the shell casings recovered from the scene.
Courdell Dejuan Loadholt was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. During his trial in December 2023, the jury rejected his self-defense claim, finding him guilty of the murder of Michael Bethea. The prosecution highlighted that there was no credible evidence to support Loadholt's version of events. After being convicted, Loadholt was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the broad-daylight shooting.
