On the evening of March 21, 2018, events inside a unit at the Pinewood Apartments in Allendale, South Carolina, turned tragically fatal for 18-year-old Tyrek Mitchell. A dispute, reportedly over a missing tablet, escalated to deadly violence. Inside the apartment, Jamel Dajour Williams locked the door, brandished a handgun, and threatened Mitchell.
The high school senior reportedly tripped and, with his hands raised, pleaded for his life before being shot multiple times.
Another man in the apartment, Raheme Granger, was also shot in the face. Both Mitchell and Granger were airlifted to a hospital in Augusta, Georgia, for treatment of their life-threatening injuries. Tragically, Tyrek Mitchell succumbed to his wounds and passed away. The investigation that followed, conducted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Allendale Police Department, quickly identified a suspect based on witness statements.
Investigators arrested 28-year-old Jamel Dajour Williams of Allendale in connection with the shooting. He was charged with murder for the death of Tyrek Mitchell, attempted murder for the shooting of Raheme Granger, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Following the shooting, Williams fled into nearby woods, leaving his weapon behind.
In January 2020, Jamel Dajour Williams, then 30, faced a jury in Allendale County. During the three-day trial, a witness recounted the harrowing moments leading up to Mitchell's death. After deliberating for only 45 minutes, the jury found Williams guilty on all charges. A judge sentenced him to life in prison for murder. Williams also received a 30-year sentence for attempted murder and an additional five years for the weapons charge, with the sentences to be served concurrently.
