Carlton Delvin Leake, a 27-year-old man from Fairmont, North Carolina, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Brittany's death. Leake was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury for shooting a second person, Carlton Dixon, who was 34 years old at the time. Dixon, who was trying to stop the conflict, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Leake was confined to the Robeson County Detention Center under no bond for the murder charge and a $250,000 secured bond for the assault charge.
