Do you know who murdered Martez Wade? In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in south Louisville, the life of 17-year-old Martez Wade was tragically cut short. On September 5, 2018, the Black male teenager was shot multiple times just after 10:30 p.m. at the Overlook Terraces apartment complex located in the 8000 block of Glimmer Way. The eleventh-grader at Breckinridge High School was remembered by his mother as a loving and caring individual who was beginning to turn his life around and do well in school.
His manager at a local Rally's restaurant also recalled him as a bright, young student.
The fatal gunshots rang out near his own home, and he died in his mother's arms. Residents of the apartment complex reported hearing the shots that ended the young man's life. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Louisville Metro Police Department officials stated that they had no suspects and few leads, urging the public to come forward with any information that might help the investigation. Martez's uncle suggested that a dispute that originated on social media may have escalated to the violence that claimed his nephew's life.
In the days following his death, family and friends gathered for a vigil to remember the high school junior, releasing balloons and lighting candles in his memory. His mother made public pleas for the person or persons responsible to turn themselves in, expressing the immense pain and void left by her son's death. She, along with others who knew Martez, hoped for answers and justice to bring a sense of closure to their grieving family. Despite their pleas and the ongoing police investigation, there have been no public announcements of any arrests or named suspects in the murder of Martez Wade.
