In the early morning hours of October 27, 2019, a tragic incident cut short the life of 38-year-old Jared Darnell Singley, a male resident of Newberry, South Carolina. The fatal event unfolded in the crowded parking lot of the Hartford Community Center, where a large, unregulated party was taking place. Inside the center, a dispute broke out between two individuals, leading to their ejection by security personnel.
The altercation spilled outside and escalated dramatically into a gun
battle involving three men. Singley, who was not involved in the initial fight or the subsequent shootout, was struck by a fatal gunshot. According to the Newberry County Sheriff, Singley was heroically attempting to shield other innocent bystanders and guide them to the safety of his vehicle when he was shot.
The investigation into Singley's death was hampered by a lack of cooperation from the numerous party attendees. Despite these challenges, investigators utilized forensic sciences and other techniques to identify those responsible for the 'senseless murder.' In July 2020, the Newberry County Sheriff's Office announced the arrests of three men in connection with the fatal shooting.
Kevin Michael Holland, 26, of Pomaria, and Curtis Ladarius Graham, 21, of Pomaria, both turned themselves in to law enforcement on July 12, 2020. A third suspect, 35-year-old Brandon Marquette Joiner of Newberry, was already in federal custody on unrelated charges. All three men were charged with murder, attempted murder, breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
