In the early hours of January 10, 2020, the life of 21-year-old Shunqavious Boyette Fisher, a Black male from Taylors, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. Greenville city police discovered him inside a vehicle at the Azalea Place Apartments just after midnight, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. His death was the final, fatal outcome of a violent chain of events that had begun earlier at a different location.
The incident that led to Fisher's death originated with a planned
robbery at Piney Mountain Park. An altercation broke out, resulting in gunfire that involved another man, 25-year-old Jalen Takis Mayes. Investigators determined that the two shootings were connected. Mayes, accompanied by 18-year-old Halen Mullinax, had gone to the park with the intent of robbing a group of people in another vehicle, which included Fisher as a passenger.
During the attempted robbery, a masked Mayes approached the vehicle and pointed a gun at another individual's head. In a sudden turn of events, that person drew their own weapon and shot Mayes. Mayes returned fire, and in the exchange, Shunqavious Boyette Fisher was struck by a bullet. Following the shooting, Mayes was driven to North Greenville Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Fisher, meanwhile, was found deceased in the vehicle at the apartment complex.
In the aftermath, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office investigated the double homicide. Their investigation led to the arrest of Halen Mullinax, who was charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon and criminal conspiracy for his role in driving Mayes to the park to commit the robbery. Law enforcement concluded that the deadly encounter was the result of a robbery that had gone wrong and announced that they did not anticipate filing any further charges in the case.
