Kawaun Montique Myers, a 33-year-old man, tragically lost his life on January 20, 2020, following a shooting in Georgetown, South Carolina. The incident that led to his death unfolded the previous night in the vicinity of Lincoln and Legion streets. Georgetown Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds.
Myers was one of the victims, and he was rushed to Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed
to his injuries. The second victim was identified as 22-year-old Coltin Brad Anderson, who was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for treatment.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement identified 22-year-old Steven Matthew Elliott as a person of interest. He was subsequently taken into custody and later charged with murder in connection with Myers' death. Further investigation by the Georgetown Police Department led to the arrest of three other suspects. Tyrell Dantrelle Hemingway, 24, Kelton Maleek Williams, 22, and Marquise Dashon Salters, 23, were also charged with murder.
Court proceedings for the four men charged in the death of Kawaun Montique Myers have been ongoing. In May of 2023, a judge denied a 'stand your ground' immunity motion filed by the defendants, allowing the case to proceed to trial. The trial for all four suspects began in June 2023. After a week of testimony and deliberation, the jury found Steven Matthew Elliott, Tyrell Hemingway, and Kelton Williams guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Marquise Salters was found not guilty. Elliott, Hemingway, and Williams were each sentenced to 30 years in prison for their roles in the death of Kawaun Montique Myers.
