In the early morning hours of September 8, 2020, 30-year-old Stephen Michael Seegars, a male from Orangeburg, South Carolina, was found dead in the parking lot of the Rivers Edge Apartments in Columbia. An autopsy later confirmed that Seegars had died from multiple gunshot wounds. The Columbia Police Department was dispatched to the scene at 1 Catawba Circle shortly before 6:00 a.m., where they discovered Seegars with serious bodily injuries before he was pronounced dead by EMS personnel.
The apartment complex is known to house students from the nearby University of South Carolina, though Seegars was not a student at the university.
Investigators believe that the suspects had a conversation with Seegars before the fatal shots were fired. Following the shooting, the assailants are accused of stealing Seegars' belongings, including his wallet, before fleeing the scene. Authorities have stated that there is no indication that Seegars knew the individuals who attacked him.
A few days after the incident, the Columbia Police Department announced the arrests of two suspects in connection with the shooting. Saequan Anderson, who was 20 years old at the time, and 32-year-old Pierre Bouknight were taken into custody. Both men were charged with murder, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Following their arrests, Anderson and Bouknight were held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. There is no publicly available information detailing the outcome of the trial or any convictions related to the death of Stephen Michael Seegars.
