In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Aiken, South Carolina, the life of 18-year-old Joseph Jamar Copeland was tragically cut short. On April 25, 2021, the young Black male was the victim of a fatal shooting. The incident occurred around 12:18 a.m. near an apartment complex at the intersection of Barnwell Avenue and Kershaw Street. Copeland and another teenager were seated inside a vehicle when unknown individuals opened fire, striking Copeland.
Following the shooting, the other
teenager in the car drove Copeland to Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Despite the swift action to get him medical attention, Copeland succumbed to at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead in the emergency room at approximately 1:40 a.m. The Aiken County Coroner's Office confirmed the details of his death and scheduled an autopsy.
