In the quiet town of Cullman, Alabama, the life of Tiffiney Joy Crawford, a 32-year-old female, came to a tragic end on May 2, 2017. That evening, her husband, Jason Crawford, placed a 911 call reporting that his wife had been shot. When deputies arrived at their home, they discovered Tiffiney deceased in the driver's seat of her van with two gunshot wounds to her head and a gun in her left hand, despite being right-handed.
Initially, some officers at the scene considered the possibility of suicide.
The initial assessment of suicide was soon questioned, particularly due to the unusual circumstance of two gunshot wounds. Because Jason Crawford's mother was an employee of the Cullman County Sheriff's Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency took over the investigation to avoid any conflict of interest. A year-long investigation ensued, and in March 2018, the medical examiner's report officially ruled Tiffiney's death a homicide. This ruling was a significant turning point in the case.
Following the homicide ruling, the investigation focused on Tiffiney's husband. Investigators learned of marital problems, including an affair Tiffiney was having, which prosecutors would later argue was Jason's motive for the murder. On May 21, 2018, just over a year after Tiffiney's death, Jason Crawford was indicted by a grand jury and arrested for the murder of his wife. He was released on bond shortly after his arrest.
Jason Crawford's trial began in November 2022, more than five years after his wife's death. The prosecution presented evidence suggesting his anger over Tiffiney's affair as the motive. The defense maintained that Tiffiney had taken her own life. During the trial, which lasted a week, Jason Crawford took the stand in his own defense. After deliberations, the jury requested to review the body cam footage from the scene. Ultimately, the jury found Jason Crawford guilty of first-degree murder.
In March 2023, Jason Dewayne Crawford was sentenced to 99 years in prison for the murder of his wife, Tiffiney Joy Crawford. Despite the conviction, Jason Crawford maintains his innocence, and his legal team planned to appeal the verdict.
