A tragic series of events on the morning of May 24, 2024, led to the death of 77-year-old Ellarea Dickson in Cullman, Alabama. The incident began when a Hartselle Police Department officer observed a vehicle driving erratically and at a high rate of speed on U.S. Highway 31. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver, later identified as 39-year-old Michael Ivy of Middleton, Tennessee, refused to comply and fled, initiating a high-speed chase.
The pursuit continued
south into Cullman, with officers from multiple agencies joining the effort to stop the fleeing vehicle. Reports indicated that Ivy was driving at speeds estimated between 60 and 100 miles per hour, running multiple red lights as he entered the city limits of Cullman. The chase came to a devastating end in front of the Town Square Shopping Center when Ivy's vehicle collided with another car.
The innocent third party in the vehicle that was struck was Ellarea Dickson. She was fatally injured in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger in Dickson's vehicle, identified as her niece, was critically injured and transported to a local hospital. Ivy, the suspect, also sustained injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital for treatment before being taken into police custody.
Following the incident, Michael Ivy was charged with attempting to elude police, a felony. Authorities indicated that he could face additional charges pending a grand jury indictment, including reckless endangerment. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has taken over the investigation into the crash. The community mourned the loss of Ellarea Dickson, who was a mother and grandmother, with funeral services held at Bremen Baptist Church.
