In the warm evening of June 5, 2021, the sounds of celebration at a graduation party on Pine Drive in Greenwood, South Carolina, were tragically silenced by gunfire. Seventeen-year-old KeShawn Admad Bland, a Black male and an up-and-coming senior at Greenwood High School, was attending the party when violence erupted. Just before 11 p.m., the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office received a call and arrived at the residence to find a scene of chaos and a young man's life hanging in the balance.
KeShawn had been shot in the back of his head or neck area. Emergency responders rushed him to Self Regional Healthcare, but his injuries were too severe. Shortly before midnight, the young man who was on the cusp of his final year of high school was pronounced dead. The Greenwood County Coroner later confirmed that KeShawn had sustained two gunshot wounds. At the scene of the party, investigators recovered several bullet shells near where he had fallen, a stark reminder of the violent end to a life that held so much promise.
In the days that followed, the community mourned the loss of KeShawn, a member of the Durham Temple C.M.E. Church who was remembered as a cherished son, brother, and friend. Despite the initial investigation and the collection of evidence, the case grew cold. No suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with his murder. The Greenwood County Sheriff's Office has urged anyone with information to come forward, but the case remains unsolved. The lack of answers has left his family and friends in a prolonged state of grief, still seeking justice for his untimely death.
