In the early morning hours of June 20, 2021, a burst of violence at a convenience store near Anderson, South Carolina, cut short the life of 27-year-old Shane Michael Ware. The shooting, which erupted before dawn, also claimed the life of 30-year-old Tevin Jeriah Telford and left a third man, Jamal K. Jones, wounded. Both Ware and Telford were rushed to AnMed Health Medical Center, but their injuries proved fatal. An autopsy would later confirm that Shane Michael Ware, a resident of Belton, died from a gunshot wound to the chest. Tevin Jeriah Telford succumbed to a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The investigation into the deadly encounter led by the Anderson County Sheriff's Office resulted in the arrest of three men. Jamal K. Jones, the man who was also injured in the shooting, faced serious charges, including two counts of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Another man, Spencer Leverette, was charged with unlawfully carrying a pistol and being an accessory after the fact to a felony, with authorities alleging he assisted someone who had committed voluntary manslaughter. The third individual arrested, Andretti Gross, was charged with unlawfully carrying a pistol. As the legal process began to unfold, the Anderson community was left to grapple with the senseless violence that had taken two young lives.
