In October of 2021, a 41-year-old man named Augustin Demsa was shot and killed in Easley, South Carolina, following an altercation. The incident occurred on October 13th at a residence on Zion Heights Court. When deputies from the Pickens County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they were met by 71-year-old Virginia Louise Cook, who informed them that she had shot a male resident after a dispute.
Inside a camper on the property, which served as Mr.
Demsa's living quarters, deputies discovered him deceased from apparent gunshot wounds to the torso. The Pickens County Coroner's Office later confirmed his identity and pronounced him dead at the scene. Initially, no arrests were made as investigators began what they described as an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
Over the course of the following week, detectives gathered additional evidence and conducted interviews with individuals associated with both Ms. Cook and Mr. Demsa. On October 21, 2021, a week after the shooting, Virginia Louise Cook was taken into custody by the Pickens County Sheriff's Office. She was subsequently booked into the Pickens County Detention Center and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. A magistrate denied her bond, and she remained in custody.
