In the autumn of 2021, the life of a young man was tragically cut short in a burst of violence that unfolded in the West Ashley area of Charleston, South Carolina. Robert Traynham, a 20-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of Wednesday, October 27, 2021. The incident took place in the vicinity of the 2100 block of an apartment complex, a residential area that was soon to become the scene of a homicide investigation.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene following
reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Robert Traynham with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was immediately transported to the Medical University of South Carolina for urgent medical attention, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that evening. The Charleston County Coroner's Office later confirmed his identity and the cause of his death.
In the days that followed, detectives with the Charleston Police Department worked diligently to piece together the events that led to Traynham's death. Their investigation quickly led them to a person of interest, and within a short period, an arrest was made. A 16-year-old male, whose name was not publicly released due to his age, was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting.
Further investigation by the authorities led to the identification and arrest of a second suspect. Elijah Hakeem Green, who was 18 years old at the time, was apprehended by the Charleston Police Department with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Task Force. Another individual, 19-year-old Jaheim Kadaryi Brown, was also arrested and charged in relation to the incident. The charges brought against the suspects included murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. The investigation suggested that the shooting was the result of a pre-arranged drug transaction that had gone tragically wrong. Both Green and Brown were subsequently booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center as they awaited legal proceedings.
