In a tragic turn of events on a Sunday afternoon in Greenville, South Carolina, 4-year-old Jeremiah Groves Jr., a male, was fatally wounded. The incident occurred on November 7, 2021, at a residence on Staunton Bridge Road where adults were engaged in target practice in the yard. While children were playing nearby, a single round discharged from a handgun struck both Jeremiah and his 7-year-old sister.
Both children were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Jeremiah, having sustained a gunshot wound to the head, succumbed to his injuries four days later on November 11, 2021. His sister remained in critical condition following the incident. The investigation into the shooting revealed that the individual handling the firearm had done so negligently, leading to the tragic outcome that claimed one child's life and severely injured another.
Authorities arrested 49-year-old Jonathan Jeremy Groves of Gastonia, North Carolina, in connection with the shooting. The investigation concluded that he was in possession of the handgun when he mishandled and discharged it. It was also determined that he was a convicted felon and was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Groves, identified as a family member of the children, was taken into custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
