In the spring of 2022, a normal workday at the Frankische plastics plant in Anderson County, South Carolina, turned into a scene of tragedy and violence. On April 5th, Iain Samuel Peare, a 24-year-old male employee from Belton, was shot in the head by a former coworker. The gunman, identified as 51-year-old Bruce Vandermosten of Anderson, had reportedly quit his job at the facility just the day before the attack.
He entered the building through an unlocked side door, armed with an AR-style rifle.
Peare was working at a station near the door where Vandermosten entered. Without warning, Vandermosten opened fire, discharging approximately six rounds in rapid succession. In addition to the fatal shot that struck Peare, a female employee was grazed by a bullet but managed to survive. The chaotic scene sent about 30 other employees fleeing for their lives to a neighboring restaurant, where workers locked the doors and turned off the lights to keep them safe.
After the initial burst of gunfire, Vandermosten turned the weapon on himself, ending his own life with a single gunshot. By the time sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, the violence had concluded. The Anderson County Coroner later ruled Iain Samuel Peare's death a homicide.
Investigators delved into the motives behind the deadly workplace shooting. It is believed that Vandermosten's actions stemmed from a romantic interest in a woman that was not returned, although authorities do not believe that any specific individual was targeted in the rampage. The incident was described by the Anderson County Sheriff as the act of someone who was 'just legit crazy.' As the perpetrator took his own life at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent criminal proceedings.
