In the quiet town of Greer, South Carolina, a friendship forged in middle school came to a tragic and abrupt end. Raelan Cole Hamilton, a 21-year-old Black man, lost his life on September 23, 2022, during what was meant to be a competitive game between friends. Hamilton and his longtime friend, James Marcus Turner, were both gun enthusiasts and often engaged in 'quick draw' competitions to see who had the faster hand.
On that fateful evening, the two were at a home on Red Raven Drive,
engrossed in their familiar contest. The routine was practiced and, they thought, safe. They would begin with unloaded firearms, insert a loaded magazine, but not chamber a round before pulling the trigger. This ritual had been performed countless times, but on the 15th round, a fatal error occurred. Turner, acting on muscle memory, accidentally chambered a round. When he pulled the trigger, he unintentionally shot his friend.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but despite their efforts, Raelan Hamilton was pronounced dead. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office responded, and both James Marcus Turner and his grandfather, who had made the 911 call, were detained for questioning. Their accounts of the evening's events were consistent with each other and with the physical evidence at the scene.
Following the investigation into the tragic incident, James Marcus Turner was charged with involuntary manslaughter. He cooperated fully with the authorities and turned himself in. He was later released on bond. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office noted the profound dangers of improper firearm handling, highlighting the devastating consequences that can arise from even a momentary lapse in caution.
