In the quiet evening of December 9, 2022, the life of 43-year-old Christopher Tobias Croft Sr. was cut short in a sudden burst of violence at his home in Aiken, South Carolina. A drive-by shooting occurred at his residence located at 1443 Redd Street NW, and when Aiken Department of Public Safety officers arrived, they found Croft inside, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Aiken County Coroner's Office.
Another man was also injured during the incident but was able to transport himself to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Christopher Croft Sr., a male resident of Aiken, had a history with the law. He had been released from prison in June of 2022 after serving a significant portion of a 15-year sentence for two separate shootings that occurred in 2009. His past legal troubles had once led to him being labeled as one of Aiken's most wanted criminal suspects. Just a few months prior to his death, in October 2022, he had been arrested again on charges including unlawful carrying of a pistol.
In the wake of the shooting, the Aiken Department of Public Safety, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the coroner's office, launched an investigation into the homicide. Authorities reached out to the public for any information that might lead to the identification of a suspect or suspects. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, no immediate arrests were made in connection with the shooting, and law enforcement did not publicly identify any suspects or a motive in the initial stages of the investigation. The case remains a stark reminder of the persistent issue of gun violence within the community.
