Betzabeth Meza, 26, a woman originally from Mexico, was killed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on the evening of December 19, 2022, after what police described as a domestic-related shooting.
It began around 5:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Cedar Street, where officers responding to reports of gunfire found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Meza had arrived there to pick up a child from a babysitter, and investigators said a man who had previously been in a relationship with her was already waiting at the location.
According to investigators, as she approached the building, the man confronted her and shot her. A neighbor’s surveillance camera captured part of the moment—showing the man getting out of a truck while holding a gun—before the violence unfolded in the open.
After shooting Meza, police said the man turned the gun on himself in an apparent attempted murder-suicide. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, while the child at the center of the pickup was reported safe and unharmed.
The Horry County Coroner’s Office identified Meza and said she died from a gunshot wound. Public reporting on the case consistently points to the former partner as the suspect, but those same accounts do not describe any arrest, formal charges, or court proceedings connected to the shooting, and authorities indicated the investigation remained ongoing in the days immediately following the killing. 5
