In the late hours of a September evening in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the life of 22-year-old Jadasia Monique Myers, a Black female, was tragically cut short. On September 24, 2017, Myers, who was five months pregnant with a daughter she planned to name Harmony, was fatally shot in the neck. The incident occurred in the backseat of a car that subsequently crashed near the Spivey Apartments at the intersection of Kings Street and Spivey Avenue.
Both Myers and her unborn child perished as a result of the gunfire.
The events leading to the fatal shooting reportedly began with a fight. In the ensuing chaos, gunfire erupted, striking Myers. Following the shooting, authorities in Myrtle Beach launched an investigation that quickly led to the apprehension of three individuals. Jordan Pyatt, then 21, was identified as the suspected shooter and faced charges including murder and the death of an unborn child. Ajay Alston, 22 at the time and identified as Myers' boyfriend, was charged with attempted murder and assault. A third man, 26-year-old Wallace Grant, was charged with obstruction of justice in connection with the case.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of resolution to the violent encounter. In January 2020, Jordan Pyatt was sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of Jadasia Monique Myers and her unborn daughter. This sentence was to include credit for the time he had already served since his arrest. The tragic loss of a young mother and her baby resonated deeply within the Myrtle Beach community, prompting vigils and rallies against the gun violence that had claimed two lives.
