Detective James A. McCluskey of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department was fatally shot on October 21, 1904, while attempting to arrest suspects involved in an armed robbery. McCluskey, along with Detectives Thomas Dwyer and John Shea, had been investigating a robbery of an Illinois Central train. After receiving a tip from a prison guard, the detectives identified three ex-convicts as the primary suspects.
