On the evening of February 7, 2008, tragedy struck the city of Kirkwood, Missouri, during a regularly scheduled city council meeting at City Hall. The meeting, which had just begun with the Pledge of Allegiance, was violently interrupted when a gunman entered the council chambers. The assailant had already confronted and fatally shot Sergeant William Biggs in the parking lot outside the municipal building.
