Michael Emil "Mike" Swoboda, the mayor of Kirkwood, Missouri, passed away on September 6, 2008, at the age of 69. His death was a direct result of injuries sustained during a tragic shooting incident at Kirkwood City Hall on February 7, 2008. On that day, Charles "Cookie" Thornton, a disgruntled resident, opened fire during a city council meeting, killing six people and injuring several others, including Mayor Swoboda.
